Mahindra yesterday announced the official name for the S101 sub-compact SUV along with its brand ambassador, Varun Dhawan, also said that 1000 units of the car have already been manufactured. Mahindra KUV100, where KUV stands for 'Kool Utility Vehicle', will come powered by an all-new engine line-up that will be known as mFalcon.
The petrol engine, mFalcon G80, is the first petrol engine created by Mahindra from scratch. Made of an all aluminium body, it is also the lightest engine in its segment. The BS IV emission standards compliant 1.2-litre petrol unit develops 82bhp and 114Nm of maximum torque.
The Mahindra KUV100's all-new diesel engine, mFalcon D75, is a 1.2-litre turbocharged common rail diesel unit that puts out 77bhp along with a peak torque of 190Nm. As far as transmission options go, both engines will come mated to a manual gearbox. One must note, the carmaker currently has no plan to bring in an AMT unit.
Mahindra had previously promised that launch of 10 products in the 2015-16 fiscal year, and has already launched 7 products. Its next launch is expected to get a starting price of 4.5 lakh, the sub-compact SUV essentially has no competition in the Indian automobile market. However, if only the Mahindra KUV100's price were to be a consideration, it will take on the Hyundai Grand i10.
One must note, Mahindra's new engine line-up will also be used in products that will roll out of the company's stable in the future.
